Sedentary Lifestyle and Mental Health
With the creation of modern-day technology, has come an increase in sedentary behavior. Furthermore, research shows a strong correlation between increased screen time, and poorer mental health statuses (Hoare, 2016).

Studies of excessive reported screen time found that 2/3 of adolescents experienced depressive symptoms from living a sedentary lifestyle. (Hoare, 2016)
Other symptoms include anxiety, self-esteem issues, suicidal ideation, loneliness, and stress.
How Does Sedentary Behavior Affect Mental Health?

Individuals using screens for more than 2-3 hours a day expressed poorer overall mental health (Hoare, 2016). With a strong correlation between depressive symptoms and time spent using screens for leisure. It is also important to take into account physical activity levels and dietary behaviors.

Implications for the Future
Finding different ways to stay active, and reducing screen time and sedentary behaviors are key to improved mental well-being. This can range from yoga, group fitness classes, to even a simple walk in the park with friends or family. Decreased sedentary behavior not only improves your overall mental health, but also lowers the risks of other diseases, such as diabetes and obesity (Hoare, 2016).
